Recovery from Mental Illness - Bouncing Back!
21/08/2007
Therapists at Wotton Lawn Hospital in Gloucester have recently introduced
trampolining as part of the rehabilitation programme for people experiencing
mental ill-health. Having completed training through British Gymnastics the
therapists are working together with nursing staff to hold regular sessions
in the hospital gym. Physiotherapists and qualified trampoline coaches Maria
Olunloyo and Sarah Duckett said; “Learning trampoline skills has all
sorts of health benefits for patients. These include developing physical fitness
and good posture; gaining a belief in your abilities by learning new skills
and having a fun time with others who are learning too”.
Kathrin Buchwald,
an occupational therapist added, “It is important that people who have
experienced mental illness feel part of their community. We are hopeful that
this opportunity will enable people to take up the sport at their local community
leisure centre. We are pleased that trampolining has sparked an interest in
a healthy new hobby for some of the people that we work with”
Trampolining is one example of an expanding range of treatments provided by
the occupational therapy and physiotherapy team within the hospital setting.
Other activities include badminton, canoeing, cycling and swimming and line
dancing.
