Mental Health Trust Staff Bike 2 Work
16/06/05
At least forty staff at Gloucestershire Partnership NHS Trust’s Wotton
Lawn Hospital, Gloucester have this week abandoned cars and buses, in favour
of ‘Biking2Work.’ The aim of the initiative - part of Bike Week,
the UK’s annual celebration of cycling - is to help reduce the number of
unnecessary car journeys by commuters and promote everyday cycling for health
and fitness.
Seasoned ‘Bike2Worker’, Mathew Page, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Unit Manager, Montpellier Unit has been providing support to less experienced cyclists by offering to check bike roadworthiness.
“Although it’s been pretty wet this week, we’ve had lots of positive feedback, with people being really surprised that their journey to work by bike doesn’t take any longer than it would in the car”
Suzy Adamson, Health Care Assistant and ‘Bike2Work’ novice - whose been doing an impressive daily roundtrip of 16 miles - explained:
“Although I’ve got quite a few aching muscles it’s been really enjoyable, and I’m still going to be cycling to work next week”
Staff who have cycled to work more than three times by the end of the week will be entered into a prize draw, with the prize not perhaps surprisingly being a voucher to buy a bike!
